Outlaw Square's timber gateway across a wide brick street under high clouds

Outlaw Square

Deadwood's public square, in the middle of Main Street.

Outlaw Square is a year-round public gathering place at 703 Main Street, with a timber gateway, a gazebo, open space, and the Sue Lundberg Memorial Stage. The site once held City Hall and the Deadwood Theater, which were lost to fire in 1952. The City of Deadwood says it lies less than 100 feet from where gold was first found in Deadwood Gulch in late 1875.

Construction began in autumn 2018, funded by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission and the State of South Dakota.

Summer concerts

The 2026 series ran free on Wednesday evenings from late May to early September. Check the concert page for the next schedule.

Skating and bumper cars

In the cold months the square becomes a skating rink with a synthetic GLICE surface rather than real ice, plus ice bumper cars. The 2026-27 season runs from October 23, 2026 through the end of April 2027 and is closed Tuesdays. Session hours vary by day, so see the skating page for current sessions and prices.
