Trail passes and permits

Rules can change, so confirm with the agency.

  • Mickelson Trail pass: The state charges $5 per person for a daily pass and $20 per person for an annual pass. Daily passes are sold at the trailhead, the trail office, or authorized vendors. Annual passes are sold online. The trail is 109 miles of crushed limestone, open year-round from dawn to dusk. Questions: 605-584-3896. Source
  • Mickelson Trail uses: Listed activities are biking, hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The state's park page does not address e-bike rules, so ask your rental shop or the trails office. Source
  • Snowmobile season and permits: Trails are open December 15 to March 31. Nonresidents can buy a $40 temporary 5-day permit online or from many trailside vendors, and nonresidents with a valid license from another state may ride. Liability insurance proof is required on public trails and road rights-of-way. Ask your outfitter what its rental includes. Rental operator dates can be shorter than the state season. Source
  • Black Hills OHV permit: In the South Dakota part of the forest, a Motorized Vehicle Use Trail Permit is required for any motor vehicle on motorized trails, and for unlicensed OHVs on forest roads open to all vehicles. Plated vehicles skip it on those roads but need it on designated trails. Buy from forest offices, local vendors, or blackhillsbadlands.com, where permits are mailed. The page lists no prices. Source
  • Motor Vehicle Use Map: The free Motor Vehicle Use Map is the official reference, and the Forest Service says not to rely on any other map. On the Wyoming side, riders need a Wyoming State ORV Permit instead. Supervisor's Office: 605-673-9200. Source
  • State OHV rules: The Forest Service says state off-road vehicle fees and requirements have been handled by the South Dakota Department of Revenue since July 1, 2023. Contact that department for current details. Source
