Seasonal Recreation
Winter
- Downhill skiing: Terry Peak Ski Area, near Lead. Check its site for conditions and tickets.
- Cross-country and snowshoeing: Eagle Cliff and Big Hill. Snowshoers should stay off groomed ski tracks.
- Snowmobiling: see snowmobile and off-road riding.
- In town: skating at Outlaw Square in season.
Spring
Trails open gradually, and snow can linger up high into April or later. Expect mud and changing weather, and check monthly averages before you pack.
Summer
This is prime time for hiking and riding, including the Mickelson Trail, and for road trips across the Hills. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so start early.
Fall
Hillsides around town turn gold, and Spearfish Canyon is close by. Nights get cold fast, and October can bring the first snow.
