Mount Moriah Cemetery sits on a plateau overlooking Deadwood Gulch and was established in 1878. The burial of James Delong that June began a record that now stands at 3,627 recorded burials, though lost and incomplete records mean the true number may be higher, and only about half have permanent markers.

Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Potato Creek Johnny and Seth Bullock all rest here. In 1908 Deadwood’s Chinese community built an altar and ceremonial oven in Section 6, rebuilt by the Historic Preservation Commission in 2013.

The cemetery charges a $2 cash entrance fee, with children under 12 free, and has seasonal hours; check the city page before you go. A promontory at the far end gives one of the best views over town. The one-mile paved loop is steep in places.
