Pluma and South Gateway

A former crossroads community between Deadwood and Lead, annexed into the city in 1985.

Pluma was once its own place. It sat at the meeting of Gold Run Creek, today followed by US 85 West, and Whitewood Creek, today followed by US 385 South. With Lead home to more residents and Deadwood serving as western South Dakota’s commercial hub, Pluma became the crossroads between them. An 1895 Lead newspaper called it “one of the most thriving places around.”

It specialized in the services the neighboring towns needed. The large Kildonan Mill, the Troy Steam Laundry and the Belt Light & Power Company all operated here. Pluma received its own post office in 1902, and the Treber Ice House followed in 1910. Pluma joined the Deadwood city limits in 1985.

Today the area is the city’s South Gateway. South Gateway Park at 420 Cliff Street includes an information center, and the concrete foundation of the Treber Ice House remains in front of it.
