Central City is a tiny Lawrence County mining town founded in 1877 during the Black Hills gold rush, with a 2020 census population of 93. It is less a destination than a short detour on the road toward Lead, and a quick reminder of how many camps once crowded these gulches. Drive time and distance are routing estimates from OSRM; allow extra for season, traffic and road work.

Highlights

  • Gold-rush setting: Founded in 1877; its 1880 census count of 1,008 was its historic peak.

Stops along the way

  • Broken Boot Gold Mine: Historic mine attraction on the US 14A corridor between Deadwood and Central City.
