Jewel Cave is one of the longest caves in the world, with over 220 miles of mapped passages. Nailhead spar, a calcite formation, coats most of its walls, ceilings and floors. All cave access is by guided tour, so reserve early through recreation.gov or arrive early for same-day tickets. Drive time and distance are routing estimates from OSRM; allow extra for season, traffic and road work.

Highlights

  • Guided cave tours: Routes include the Scenic Tour, Historic Lantern Tour and Wild Caving Tour.

Stops along the way

  • Crazy Horse Memorial: On US 385 on the way south.
  • Jewel Cave Visitor Center: Off US 16 west of Custer.
